Details

Remembering or preserving one's history, is one of the crucial ways by which a community hands on its identity and empowers itself for present and future challenges. Forgetting in a collective sense happens when any community fails to transmit to future generations what its members understand about themselves and about events in their past. This volume is an act of remembering. Herein is a collection of eighteen family vamsavazhi traditions from Tirunelvelli-narratives of ancestors who became Christians in centuries past, recounting family joys, sufferings, virtues and failings that came with new faith and conversion. These chapters represent a partial recovery, by some of the Indian Christians, of a portion of their common past. Indeed, this uncovering and preserving of what lay buried in Tirunelvelli's past can serve as an impetus and model for Christian remembering elsewhere i South Asia.
